drama workshops and a visit to this year's Christmas Pantomime, Dick
Whittington performed at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.
The workshops took place in school and were led by the Theatre's Education
Officer, Hayley Murrow. The children learned about freeze-frames and
characterisation, following an extract of live script. After watching the
show, the children met Co-Director, David Whitney and found out about his
role in putting together such a performance from the first auditions to the

performance showing some of our favourite characters: Dick Whittington,
Tommy the Cat and Dame Winona.
We will be writing our own reviews of the pantomime and publishing a few of
these as well as sending several examples to Mr Whitney - he's promised to
share these with the acting team!
We've had a brilliant time and we would like to renew our links with The
Theatre Royal later in the school year.
It was my absolute pleasure to come into your school and meet the young people you teach. Outreach and Engagement is such an important part of our work and it is vital we give young people an enriching experience when they come to see a production at our theatre.
Your pupils were fantastic. Their questioning was detailed, well-structured and managed to focus on the many facets of Pantomime and in particular what my role entails.
This morning I have read the reviews and they are brilliant! What a talented group you have, you must be very proud. I will be sure to put some of them up backstage along with the blog post and perhaps some on our staff noticeboard too.
Thanks once again for allowing us share the work we do with your pupils and I do hope we can collaborate in the future on more projects.
Here is some feedback for your pupils. I wish them all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year J
Chloe – Lovely review, you really made it clear which sections you enjoyed and used excellent vocabulary to get your point across. Well done!
Mia – Well done Mia. This is a lovely review and your handwriting is beautiful. I real liked how you told me about your favourite songs and the impact they had on you.
Alex - Your use of language was excellent in this review. You seemed to really enjoy it Alex, I am glad you had such a great time and the review reflects your feelings very well. Great job!
Ursula – I really like this review. Your illustrations are lovely Ursula and very accurate to our set design. I like how you have reflected deeply on the piece and as well as pointing out its merits you have also been honest about sections you did not enjoy, which is just as important when reviewing. Well done for providing a balanced piece of work!
George - This review really brought to life the excitement and magic you experienced whilst watching the performance. You remembered some key facts of the story which really helped to encapsulate the piece. Well done!
Faye – What a lovely piece of writing Faye. I like how you told me who your favourite character was and why. You remembered a lot of detail. The only edit I would make is to say that it’s the first pantomime I have directed rather than the first ever show, apart from that its spot on. I particularly liked how you remembered in detail the process I use in rehearsals, could there be another budding director out there Faye?!
On 20.12.2017, Pantomime Dame, Winona Whittington (Chris Clarkson) responded:
Cooeeeee! My name is Chris Clarkson but you probably know me better as Winona Whittington. Firstly, thank you all for coming to see the pantomime the other day - you were a fab audience!!
I’ve really enjoyed reading your reviews, they’re so well written. Clearly you all had a good time in the theatre, which is brilliant to hear. I liked how you discussed the different aspects of the show that you found particularly good such as the lighting, the sound cues, the music and the scenery. Also, it’s good to read why you liked or disliked things, too. For example, just saying ‘I liked the costumes’ is fine but ‘I liked the costumes because they were colourful & helped create the characters’ is better and helps the reader to understand what you mean.
All in all, they were great reviews. Thanks again for coming and I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas! CC (aka WW) x
